Chinese New Year

Tomorrow is Chinese New Year day. We will wear red, eat rice and chicken with chop sticks and learn a little about China.

100th Day

Our 100th Day of School is Thursday January 26th!
Students are encouraged to wear something that has 100 items on it. Examples from the past include: shirts and hats with 100 eyeballs, ribbons, flowers, kisses, $1.00, etc.. Have fun designing this fun item with your child!

We will be have a pumpkin day this Friday Nov. 4th. We will taste pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread and make pumpkin play-dough!

We are going to Devine's Pumpkin Patch on October 26th.

Our annual gift and gift-wrap sale “Celebrate the Season” began this week. You received a packet with information and brochure in your child’s backpack. Your participation is appreciated and will help JELV stay current with new technology.

Parent Orientation

Parent Orientation Night is September 1st
Parents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the expectations, curriculum, and meet some of the school staff. This should last about 1 hour.
This is the only time that we asked for the students to remain at home, as there are no activities planned for little ones. A reminder about this is attached.

Snack Request

Due to our lunch being late this year (12:46-1:11), I would like to serve a small snack each day during our writing workshop (10:30am). I am hoping that parents can help out with this request by sending in non-messy, small, peanut free snacks. I have been to the classroom a few times in the past couple of weeks! We mailed out our welcome letters and I started to make my "hello" phone calls.

The Kissing Hand

I love to use the book The Kissing Hand as a back to school read aloud. This is a story about a little raccoon getting ready to go to school for the first time. He is afraid and doesn’t want to leave his mother. His mother comes up with a way to help her little one remember that she loves him and is thinking about him, even when he is at school. A wonderful 1^st day or 1^st week of school read aloud.

What else do we do?

1. We go on a "hunt" around our school building to search for Chester. Our search leads us to important areas in the building (music room, art room, gym, cafeteria, office, library, etc...) Once we have read each of the clues, the last one leads us back to our classroom where we "find a treat from Chester" (hand shaped sugar cookies).

2. Re-read the story with flannel board pieces.

3. Make a handprint craft to send home. (painted hands with a poem about our first day of school).

4. We complete the above activities (day and night sorts, number and letter match)

5. The book, a raccoon "Chester" puppet and flannel board pieces are then placed in the story retelling center for the students use.

Back to School Already

Wow, I went to the store today and school supplies were already out! There is something about the smell of new crayons, the displays of markers, notebooks and pencils that is so exciting for kiddos and many teachers!
Here is a link for the Universal Kindergarten Supply List

We will not need pencils or folders. I have plenty of pencils and I will provide a small notebook for each child.

I am reading several great books this summer and wanted to share.
1. Morning Meeting by Roxann Kriete. Morning Meeting is a wonderful way of building classroom community, social and academic skills. I am excited to use some of the ideas from the book!
2. Introduction to Problem Solving by Susan O'Connell This book uses the National Math Standards as a basis for giving great ideas on teaching kiddie how to use a variety of strategies to problem solve.
